Hi, I’m Karen! Originally from Connecticut, I live in the Boston area with my spouse and my kid. I’m a scientist by day and really enjoy my job, but my true passion is clay.
I started doing pottery in early 2023, and from my very first time on the wheel I was absolutely hooked. I took one class, then another, and another… and now I’m a member at the Pottery Mill community studio in Lowell, MA and a perpetual student in Matt Camburn‘s Advanced Wheel Throwing classes.
I mostly do wheel throwing but occasionally I’ll hand build. I enjoy both, but I find wheel throwing to be very zen… except when it isn’t, lol.
My favorite pottery technique is mishima – something about inlaying slip or underglaze into a design I’ve carved is just really satisfying to me.
My current favorite glaze is Amaco Potter’s Choice Tourmaline although I just got a bunch of new glazes to try – test tiles, here I come!
I dislike pulling handles, but I do it anyway. I love making stupid jokes on my pottery that only like 3 people in the world will understand. And recently I discovered that after nothing but trouble in my last foray, I now actually enjoy throwing with porcelain. Who knew?!?
I hope you’ll come along with me as I continue my pottery journey. It’s been a blast so far, and I can’t wait to see what else is in store!
